This work as with many of my paintings has a base in Classical myths and epic poems. The central figure stands within an enclosing tree form. This is representative of her life’s journey and the events that have shaped her present moment. On the tree hang emblems of this journey. On the right is Odysseus escaping the Cyclops cave hanging under the belly of one of the sheep. On the left is the Trojan horse, a devise conceived by Odysseus to trick and overthrow the Trojans. In the background a wave arises, both threatening to engulf the world of Penelope and also symbolic of the unstoppable nature of life’s events unfolding.
