This work is based on the often fractured relationship between men and women, both in the actual world and in literature. The knight in the background seeks a passive decorative woman, the woman seeks a heroic strong man. Neither can ever be satisfied until they see the non stereotypical humanity in the other. On the knights shield is the emblem of a fish and a wheel. A play on the expression ‘A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle’. In the extreme background the architecture is set at discordant angles, suggesting a conflict with the geometry of the foreground. The gable end immediately above the woman’s head doubles as a cone hat, elements within the architecture forming a letter ‘D’.
